How To Get Indian Maps for Android

So, here's another short tutorial on how to get fully functional Indian maps for use on the Motorola Milestone or any other Android phone available on the market.

Requirements :

Motorola Milestone with Motonav Or Android phone with iGO My Way 2009
Content Folder Part 1
Content Folder Part 2
Content Folder Part 3

Procedure :

1. Download all the 3 parts of the content folder and extract. Everything should be extracted to a "Motonav" folder with a subfolder called content.

2. Plug your phone in with Mass Storage Mode enabled.

3. If you have a Motorola based phone with Motonav installed, just copy the Motonav folder to the SD Card. A prompt will ask you if you wish to replace the files with the ones in the folder being copied. You can safely approve and let the copy process take place.

4. If you have another Android phone without Motonav, you require iGO My Way 2009 to be installed to use these maps. In this case, rename the extracted Motonav folder to iGO and copy it straight to the SD Card.

5. Unplug the phone ( you know, after ejecting ) and start up the software. Now you should have all the Indian maps on your phone.

Using these maps nullifies the requirement for an EDGE connection in India and the phone can be used as a dedicated GPS by itself. So one can incur less cost while using EDGE or anyone visiting the country can use these maps without a cell phone connection at all.

This is also useful for those who've upgraded or formatted the SD Cards in their Indian-bought Milestones and don't have a backup of the Indian maps. Another use comes in handy for those who've bought their phones from outside the country and would like the benefits that the Indian buyers enjoy over here.

Anyway, this concludes the tutorial. Best of luck.

  1. hi! really useful tutorial. i have a question and i would be glad if you could help me out.

i live in malaysia. got my milestone a couple of days ago. its a uk milestone pre-loaded with europe maps. can u tell me how to install maps for my region? or do you have a way to extract the maps out from a local (malaysian) milestone set?

    awesome posts btw. thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  2. Yessir. All you do is get a local Milestone, and copy the Motonav folder that exists on the SD Card. It'll have the Malaysian maps :)

    Good luck.

  3. Great job, Aumkar. Need your help. purchased new milestone, but replaced original 8GB microSD card with 16GB. Did not know about the motonav folder being installed on the factory fitted microSD. As I do not have the original motonav folder, do I have to install 'IGo my way'? Where can I download it from..? I tried from a couple of sites, but it seems to be a 1.2 GB software. Is that right? Please help and tell me a site where I can download this. Thanks in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  4. No, all you have to do is transfer the Motonav folder from your older 8GB SD card to the newer 16GB SD Card. Your phone already comes preinstalled with the full version of Motonav.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hi again, Aumkar. I do not have the older 8 gb card. Now is there anything that i can do..? Thanx

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hi Aumkar, are part I and part II same..? Both are showing the same file size, down to the last kb. On merging the files, it is asking to replace the files with the same names..!!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I just split them by 100MB so my uploading was fine.

    And one is .part1.rar, .part2.rar, and .part3.rar

I think youre downloading them wrong.

Also, all you have to do is download all 3 parts, and extract them to the SD card.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi Aumkar, can I download the motonav folder from somewhere, as I do not have the original 8 GB microSD card? Thanx..

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yeah, just download the 3 files here. Extract them, and put them on the SD Card.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks, i did the install, but it says

    Missing or incomplete folder:
    Motonav/licence

    What should I attempt now..?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Weird. Download this.

    http://rapidshare.com/files/388747304/license.rar

I just pulled the license folder from my phone. All you have to do is download, extract and put it in the Motonav folder on the SD Card.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Did that. But an activation code came during the setup process that asked me to log on to motoextras. On doing so and feeding the activation code to get another activation code I got the following response..

MOTONAV premium activation for Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia $ 59.99
    One Time Upgrade

Now what..? I thought it would be an indian licence. I know you must be getting bugged by my queries, but only you have offered to help. Thanks...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hm, you have to install the trial free version of Motonav in my other guide here then to circumvent that problem.

My phone is from Singapore hence it must be giving you that problem.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hi Aumkar,

Any possibility of getting the Indian licence folder.? Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Rajesh

  15. its posted in one of the earlier comments.

  16. Hi Aumkar,
Can u upload the content folder using other upload site? Because i can't download from rapidshare. Erm also i have this question in mind.. when i purchase the phone the SD card was already formatted hence leave me with no preloaded application or motornav map so i was wondering by installing the file will i be able to use it like others does.... thank u

    ReplyDelete
  17. I'm sorry, I just use one filehoster for all my needs. I never upload to any other.

And if your SD card was preformatted, it shouldn't have been. Its supposed to contain basic maps etc.

Anyway, once you download the maps, you'll be able to put it on the SD Card and use it like the other Milestone users.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi um the thing is all the folders are called motonav with the subfolder content so how do I replace it??

    ReplyDelete
  19. Er, just overwrite the files on the SD Card.

    ReplyDelete
  20. No I did overwrite it but all the files part 1 part 2 and part 3 have the same contents so even when I've replaced the orignal motonav folder and replaced it with yours I can put part 2 and part 3 because it has the same files as part 1 and my only option is to replace it when I extract or copy/paste

    ReplyDelete
  21. When you extract, All 3 files should be in the same folder. You just have to extract from part1.rar. The rest will extract automatically.

    ReplyDelete
  22. what are the 3 files called? and when I extract it creates a folder that says motonav with a folder which says content each time.
Should I select all 3 parts and extract?
oh and what will the approx file size of all the combined be?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Just extract part1.rar. It'll result in only one folder. That folder is all you need. You don't need to extract part 2 and 3.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ohhh ok thanks! why'd you put part 2 and 3?
cuz the file size of 1 alone is 300 mb where as the orignal was 1.71gb!

    ReplyDelete
  25. The whole Motonav folder was split into three parts ( hence part1, 2 and 3 ) to comply with the filehoster's maximum size hosting policy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. my point exactly! which is why I was wondering if you split it into 3 parts won't I need all the 3 parts?
when I extract part 1 all i get is 290mb folder

    ReplyDelete
  27. Because Winrar extracts from part 2 and part 3 automatically when you extract the first part.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ok thanks soo much
and I'll just copy paste the license file you uploaded.
My milestone is from the uk and I'm currently in the us but I live in india

    ReplyDelete
  29. it says cannot open available map file with your license

    ReplyDelete
  30. Use the other guide that I have in here for the full version of Motonav. That'll fix this problem.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I use an android phone. your instructins are perfect andd i understand them completely.
Iwas just looking for the Igo app. I dont think its officially released cause its not t=on the market or on their site. any other app where i can try this?

    ReplyDelete
  32. https://android.naviextras.com/shop/portal/downloadAPK ha ha got it.
    didnt try yet.
    its igo for android

    ReplyDelete
  33. Lol :)

See, every app that's Android based, also has a resolution to keep.

While Motonav's resolution is 854x480, iGo's resolution is 480x320, for the older androids.

    ReplyDelete
  34. so that means for me i have a htc hero witha screen resolution of 320 * 480. ill have no problem if i use iGo right?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yep, iGo will work just fine with the Hero

    ReplyDelete
  36. It does not work . says some files are missing.
I retried, redownloaded, re installed all combinatiins. still no luck

    ReplyDelete
  37. \m/ Thanks for these files, been looking for these for a long time .. Can you please upload a torrent for all these files, including the licence. Rapis share has too much limitation..Thanx

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Matt, thats weird. These are the same files for iGo My Way for Android 2009.

@Tech Assist, I can't upload these as a torrent. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Bro,would you be able to upload the files to another more accessible link rather than rapidshare? Cheers!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. is there a cracked version of IGo.apk??

    ReplyDelete
  41. I prefer using just a single filehost.

And there will probably be a cracked version of iGo on the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  42. while launching motonav app it says missig or incomplete folder motonav/license what should i do plz suggest

    ReplyDelete
  43. Read the comments. The answer is in there.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Does the licence u posted expire in 60 days or is it life time?

    ReplyDelete
  45. HI Aumkar,
I have Motorola Milestone from Germany. I have Europe maps in Motonav, i downloaded all the files and put in my folders. Now when i open it says Inactive Content for India. For all the other Europe country it works.
    Please help me...

    ReplyDelete
  46. The License is lifetime, and thats weird that you get an Inactive content error.

Read the comments, I've posted a link for the Indian license. Try using that after backing up your old license.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks for the post Aumkar.

I followed the instructions for iGO on my samsung spica android phone but when I launch iGO, it complains - "program application database cannot be found".

Anyone else got this working on a non-motorola phone?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm pretty sure you need iGo My Way 9/2009 to use these maps.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Aumkar : A suggestions, There have been too many comments on this thread. So ppl are not reading through everything. This is resulting into duplicate queries.

Guess you just rewrite the "Procedure:" part with some additional notes for iGo , Licence and Torrent.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Amazing post AUMKAR , you gave an excellent solution to overcome MOTONAV access trouble in INDIA (as I bought my Milestone from SINGAPORE).Thanks !

    ReplyDelete
  51. Aumkar : I installed all the files, including licence.. The error message is " Cannot open map files with your current licence.. I even tried Factory Reset.. Doesnt help.. Guess I will have to stick to my Thailand maps :(
In btwn I heard India Milestone comes preloaded with Mapmyindia app.. anyone ??

    ReplyDelete
  52. Great job aumkar... i have a in dash car navigation pioneer f900bt with IGO8. i had looking for the .fbl maps for ages. these maps work seamlessly. WHAT A LIFE SAVER. thanx

    ReplyDelete
  53. I download all 3 parts, then renamed the folder to iGO.
    Installed iGO.
When i started it said missing licence. So I downloaded and copied the one you posted here.
Now when i start it says missing /iGO/content/lang
Can you provide that file aswell?

    ReplyDelete
  54. That has to do with language files I'm guessing.. and I only have english. Don't think it'll be of much help because you'll have the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I use the phone language english aswell.
But the folder "lang" is not there in motonav folder.

    ReplyDelete
  56. thanks to the original poster. got and running on nexus one. But having used sygic with mapmyindia, can say sygic is much better. search through ipmart-forum for sygic with mapmyindia.

  57. Dear Folks,

I'll be traveling to India soon. I own a Moto Droid phone running Android 2.2 and will like to use offline navigation as much as possible.

Will this procedure work on Moto Droid running Android 2.2 ??

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I went ahead and installed the full Motonav from your other tutorial and then the indian maps from this one. It seems to work on Moto Droid.

The maps are all black and white though. Is that how it is supposed to be, does not seem right.

    ReplyDelete
  59. does any one have latest india maps for motnovan
Motonav working perfectly on milestone 2.1
    where i can find ...

    ReplyDelete
  60. At the posters, yes, it'll work on a Droid with Android 2.2 ( I have Froyo on my Milestone )

The maps aren't black and white. I'm guessing its a setting somewhere.

And at the last poster.. Do you read..?

    ReplyDelete
  61. The Rapidshare Links are gone

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hm, I'll reupload them over the course of the week.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hey Aumkar!
I asked motorola support, for old content of SD cArd, they send me a link with it.
    But!
Can you describe me, how can update Milestone to 2.2? I've added you on gtalk

    ReplyDelete
  67. any news about new 620 cities India map update from MMI. please post it if u have it.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hi Aumkar,

I have my motonav running on milestone, but I am having old maps. (My phone is not rooted).
My India maps are version 2009.02

I am not able to download the newest version of India maps from motorola toolbox. Can u guide me which version of maps are posted above? Any chance of getting latest India maps?

    Thanx

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hi, even I am having a problem updating from Motorola Toolbox. It just shows a download error after downloading a few megabytes. Anyone know how to get the latest MMI update on the phone?

    ReplyDelete
  70. I just bought galaxy-s in india, no 3g so far and no turn by turn navigation either. Would appreciate help if these files are uploaded again! and if I can make them work on my Sammy!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'll be uploading the files to Multiupload tonight. For your Galaxy S, you'll have to use iGo My Way 2009 to use the maps that I have.

However, on a short notice, I installed the Brut Google Maps and enabled sd card caching, and downloaded the maps using the Atlas Mobile Map Creator.

Since this guide is kinda dated, I'll be writing a new one soon using the Brut Google Maps cuz theyre simpler.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hi Aumkar,
Thank you forthe links and the guide. I have a Motorola Backflip and accidently erased my Motonav folder by formatting the SD card. I've been after Motorola customer support for months but they are really lax. Can you please upload the Motonav license agsin when you get the time? The present link is dead. Thanks.
    Vijay

    ReplyDelete
  73. Well, I've reuploaded the Motonav files. You can acquire them from there.

    I've used Multiupload.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hi Aumkar
any news about 620 cities map pls

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hi Aumkar,
Link for India licence folder is not working, can you please upload it again, my another query is can I directly use the india licence without rooting the phone. My phone is from UK. Thanks a lot for your help

    ReplyDelete
  76. How to extract the files... ? Which software to use?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Aumkar,
Can you re post the link to the license file, it's expired.

    Thanks,
    Sunil

    ReplyDelete
  78. There should be one in the comments. I don't use Motonav anymore.

I use Brut Maps with cached maps.
